Consolidated sales increased 10% year over year to ¥3,429.4 billion, while operating income climbed 45% to ¥622.3 billion. Operating margin expanded 430 basis points to 18.1%, reflecting stronger gaming and Pictures profitability.

Fiscal 2026 sales guidance was raised by 4% to ¥13 trillion and operating income guidance by 9% to ¥1.87 trillion. Net income guidance was increased by 10% to ¥1.33 trillion, while operating cash flow expectations rose to ¥1.6 trillion.

Sony Sees Stronger PlayStation Engagement

CFO Lin Tao emphasized improving PlayStation engagement, with September monthly active users reaching 127 million accounts, up 7% year over year. Total quarterly playtime increased 4%, indicating stronger platform activity.

During the analyst discussion, Goldman Sachs questioned whether engagement could continue expanding. Tao identified monthly active users, playtime and average revenue per user as central indicators of future platform monetization.

Management expects major releases, including Grand Theft Auto VI, to support engagement beyond the current fiscal year. Stronger third-party software demand contributed to the revised gaming operating income forecast of ¥700 billion.

SONY Addresses Memory Costs and Console Investments

Rising memory prices remained a significant concern during the call. Tao explained that pricing adjustments, promotional changes and cost reductions have helped protect current-year PlayStation hardware profitability.

Responding to BofA Securities, Tao acknowledged that higher memory costs and next-generation platform investments would challenge future profitability. Management confirmed that development remains on schedule and emphasized disciplined investment.

Sony expects new PS5 hardware unit sales to decline gradually as the console matures. Management intends to prioritize engagement and monetization across its installed base rather than depend exclusively on hardware growth.

Sony Expands Entertainment Monetization Opportunities

Pictures emerged as a major earnings driver, supported by Spider-Man: Brand New Day. The film generated more than $2.5 billion in worldwide box office revenues, contributing to substantial segment profitability improvements.

Tao highlighted opportunities to extend successful intellectual property across films, gaming and music. Following the movie's release, related game sales approximately doubled, demonstrating commercial benefits from cross-business collaboration.

Music streaming remained another growth contributor. Sony plans to introduce a dedicated Crunchyroll hub on PS5 next spring, connecting anime discovery with its gaming audience and supporting broader entertainment engagement.

SONY Navigates Sensor Demand and Supply Challenges

Imaging & Sensing Solutions faced weaker smartphone demand, with quarterly segment sales declining 6% year over year. Operating income nevertheless increased 12%, supported partly by favorable currency movements.

During questioning from BofA Securities, Tao acknowledged potential customer sourcing diversification. Management emphasized maintaining technological leadership and cost competitiveness amid intensifying competition.

Sony's collaboration with TSMC represents another strategic priority. Management expects the partnership to improve image sensor competitiveness and long-term capital efficiency while monitoring demand uncertainty and changing customer product cycles.

Sony Maintains Investment and Profitability Focus

Management's broader message centered on balancing entertainment expansion with financial discipline. Tao highlighted growing revenue opportunities across PlayStation Network, Crunchyroll and Sony's intellectual property portfolio.

During the capital allocation discussion, Tao confirmed ¥1.5 trillion in approved strategic investments, primarily targeting entertainment. Management also identified additional capacity for shareholder returns while maintaining financial stability.
